On Sunday, 7th August, there was also a special programme with puja, bhajans and a meeting at the C.I.T. Ashrama attended by about 750.
From 2002, Rev. Mataji had been keeping indifferent health following hip bone fracture. In 2004, a pacemaker was inserted to regularize her heart beat; later she suffered from chronic UTI and septicemia, high blood sugar and blood pressure, following which her health broke to a great extent. Though under close medical supervision, her weakness increased alarmingly, leaving no option to doctors for further treatment.
A disciple of Swami Virajananda, she lived in an Ashrama from a young age and in 1950 joined the Ramakrishna Mission, along with others, as dedicated worker. She was sent to the newly started Matribhavan hospital where she stayed for a few months and then came to serve at Nivedita School. In 1954, she was initiated into Brahmacharya by Swami Sankarananda, President of Ramakrishna Math, in the old shrine of Belur Math. In the meantime, the Ramakrishna Mission accepted the gift of a property at Entally, Kolkata with the object of starting a Women’s Welfare Centre. On 10th July, 1954, Swami Sankarananda, President of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission performed the opening of the Women’s Math at the Ramakrishna Mission, Entally, where she, along with 7 other Brahmacharinis, had been sent to lead a contemplative life in preparation to the formal opening of Sri Sarada Math at Dakshineswar on 2nd December, 1954. Rev. Mataji stayed at the Math till April 1955, when she was asked to take charge of the Ramakrishna Mission Women’s Welfare Centre at Entally; and in 1956, was appointed Secretary. In 1959, she received Sannyasa from Pravrajika Bharatiprana, the first President of Sri Sarada Math, the independent women’s counterpart of the Ramakrishna Order.
In 1960, the hostel for college girls was opened at Entally. In 1961, the Ramakrishna Mission Women’s Welfare Centre was legally transferred to the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission and renamed ‘Ramakrishna Sarada Mission Ashrama’. She remained Secretary of the centre from 1956 till the end. In 1983, she was appointed trustee of Sri Sarada Math and member of the Governing Body of the Ramakrishna Sarada Mission and in 2009, elected Vice President. In spite of her frail health, Rev. Mataji blessed a few aspirants with mantra diksha.
Of strict principles without compromise, yet courteous and compassionate, she became guide to many young girls and drew respect and love from all those who came to her. Endowed with a fine artistic sense, she could draw beauty from simple things. She leaves behind a shining example of complete dedication, devotion and surrender to Sri Ramakrishna, Holy Mother and Swamiji. May her soul rest in eternal peace!
